Importance of Bokarius family for development of forensic medicine in Ukraine (Review Article)

On the occasion of the 220th anniversary of founding of the V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University and, accordingly, the Kharkiv National Medical University and with the aim of focusing attention on the role of the Bokarius family in the development of forensic medicine and criminalistics in Ukraine, the scientific path of three representatives of this dynasty is highlighted: father Mykola Mykolayovych and sons Mykola Mykolayovych and Vitalii Mykolaiovych. For achieving the set goal, general scientific methods were applied: description, comparison, analysis, generalization. The Bokarius family devoted more than 100 years of professional life to the service of forensic medicine and criminalistics. Mykola Serhiyovych Bokarius, known as an erudite scientist and talented teacher, the founder of the forensic direction in Ukrainian forensic medicine, did a lot to form the domestic system of forensic examination and specialized expert institutions, in particular the Cabinet of Scientific Forensic Examination in Kharkiv. The scientific, expert and teaching activities of Honored Professor M. S. Bokarius were continued by his eldest son, Mykola Mykolayovych who for 25 years headed the Kharkiv Institute of Forensic Examinations and made a significant contribution to the training of personnel at other Kharkiv institutes: medical and legal (he founded Department of Forensic Science of the latter). The fate of the youngest son of Mykola Serhiyovych, namely: Vitalii was determined by the war: after graduating from the Kharkiv Medical Institute, he went to the front. No information about him has survived in printed sources; the authors used the memoirs of his son, military doctor Serhii Vitaliiovych.
