ARCHIVING POLICY AND LONG-TERM PRESERVATION IN OPEN ACCESS
Open Access Policy
The Collection provides immediate open access to its content based on the following principle: free and open access to research results contributes to increased exchange of knowledge and scientific achievements. The Open Access policy provides free, immediate, and permanent access to scientific publications, allowing users to read, download, copy, and distribute materials with mandatory attribution of authorship.
The Collection is an open access publication, which means that all content is freely available to the user or their institution. Users are allowed to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, link to the full texts of articles and/or use them for any other lawful purpose without asking prior permission from the publisher or the author(s), and without any registration. Registration is required only for submitting a manuscript for publication and its peer review. This corresponds to the definition of open access provided by the Budapest Open Access Initiative (BOAI), which promotes unrestricted and free public access to scientific research, much of which is publicly funded; the Bethesda Statement on Open Access Publishing, published on June 20, 2003; and the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities of October 22, 2003, particularly regarding the transition to the paradigm of electronic open access.
These provisions are determined by the quality standards of scientific works and their presentation established for the global scientific community, including the Open Access publication principles, the Publishing Ethics Resource Kit (PERK), the recommendations of Elsevier, the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the Ethical Code of the Scientist of Ukraine, as well as the experience of foreign and Ukrainian professional communities, scientific organizations, editorial boards, and editorial offices of academic publications.
Archiving Policy and Long-Term Preservation in Open Access
Full-text real-time access to the scientific articles of the Collection is available on the official website in the Archives section (https://khrife-journal.org/index.php/journal/issue/archive). To ensure permanent access to publications, the editorial board of the collection “Theory and Practice of Forensic Science and Criminalistics” (hereinafter — the Collection) places full-text issues in open access at the V. I. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine and in the repository of the National Scientific Center “Hon. Prof. M. S. Bokarius Forensic Science Institute” of the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine. Article metadata (title, author(s), abstract, keywords) are also stored in open access for indexing in international databases.
Published materials remain available regardless of changes in publishing policy or technical platforms.
The licensing policy of the Collection is compatible with most open access and archiving policies. The Creative Commons Attribution License International CC_BY_4.0 is used, which regulates the use of copyrighted materials, usually requiring proper attribution and governing the reuse of content.
The following key principles of open access and use are supported:
- Copyright: the author retains copyright while granting the Collection the right of first publication. Readers obtain the right to read, download, copy and distribute the work, provided that the author’s name is properly acknowledged.
- Licensing (Creative Commons).
- Attribution (BY): allows any use provided that authorship is acknowledged.
- NonCommercial (NC): prohibits use for commercial purposes.
- NoDerivatives (ND): prohibits the creation of derivative works (translations, adaptations).
- Self-archiving: authors have the right to place their works in institutional repositories or on their personal websites after publication, etc.
These conditions allow materials to be freely used for educational and scientific purposes without the need to obtain special permission, while respecting the rights of authors.
